Saudi Arabia's aluminum demand is heading for a second million tonnes. Ahmad Al-Alshaikh, who runs Maaden's aluminum business, told an industry conference in Budapest this week that domestic demand, now about one million tonnes a year, should reach 1.6 to 1.8 million tonnes by 2030 and could double within five to seven years. The projection is a company's, and should be read as one. The arithmetic underneath it is harder to argue with: the Kingdom already uses more aluminum than it smelts, and nearly everything on the national construction calendar widens that margin.
The confirmed figures are these. Maaden produces about 780,000 tonnes of primary aluminum a year and sells 85 percent of its output inside the Kingdom. Al-Alshaikh named the demand drivers directly: fifteen new stadiums for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, exposition construction, and the diversification programs building out automotive, aerospace, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing capacity. His remarks were made at the Fastmarkets International Aluminium Conference and reported this week.
The domestic sales share is the detail worth pausing on. Smelters of this scale are usually built to export; Maaden's aluminum operation now functions mostly as an input to the Kingdom's own construction and manufacturing run. That quiet conversion, from export asset to home supplier, is what a diversification program looks like from inside a commodity producer. It also means the growth in the forecast cannot be met by redirecting exports; at the top of the projected range, domestic demand would run roughly a million tonnes past current primary supply.
The choice that follows is only nominally about metal. Primary aluminum is close to being congealed electricity: smelting sits wherever power is cheap, abundant and contracted for decades. Adding domestic smelting capacity would place a large, permanent industrial load on a grid that is in the middle of its own transition, with solar capacity scaling up precisely so that gas can be freed from power generation. The alternative is to import the gap, which saves the electrons but reopens an import dependence in a sector the industrial strategy has marked for localization. Neither answer is free, which is what makes the demand line a policy question rather than a sales forecast.
What separates this from an ordinary growth story is the deadline structure. Stadium programs for 2034 must be tendered and supplied years ahead of the tournament, and the Expo 2030 build in Riyadh is nearer still. Event-driven demand arrives on a schedule that does not flex with prices, which is the opposite of ordinary commodity demand. For suppliers, that is rare visibility. For planners, it means the capacity decision, or the import bill that substitutes for it, has a date attached.
The demand mix also pulls value downstream. Stadium cladding, curtain wall, cable and vehicle bodywork are fabricated products, not ingots, and the margin lives in rolling, extrusion and finishing capacity. The timing is pointed: the Kingdom's first home vehicle marque is due to reveal its first production models in Riyadh on Monday, and an automotive supply chain is precisely the kind of anchor customer that justifies downstream metal investment. An aluminum strategy becomes an industrial strategy at exactly that junction.
The items to watch are concrete: whether Maaden converts its own forecast into a stated smelting or downstream expansion, how power for any new capacity is allocated and priced, and how much of the 2030 gap is covered by imports in the meantime. A million tonnes of new demand is a market. Who supplies it is a policy, and the window for deciding is set by a tournament calendar that does not move.
