The Kingdom completed its first remote robotic surgery, with a medical team in Riyadh operating on a patient at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah through a robotic surgical platform.
The procedure connects two threads of the health transformation program: the expansion of robotic surgery capacity in Saudi hospitals, and the shift toward care that does not require the patient and the specialist to be in the same city.
Why Distance Matters Here
Specialist surgical expertise concentrates in major centers. Patients do not. A validated remote capability means the expertise travels over the network instead of the patient traveling by road or air, with implications for smaller cities and for emergency cases where transfer time is the constraint.
One procedure is a demonstration, not a system. The distance between demonstration and routine practice is where the next stage of the program will be measured.
